This October marks the 80th observance of National Fire Prevention Week, first proclaimed in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge to raise public awareness about the shocking level of life and property destroyed annually by fire. He hoped that this week-long educational event would help reduce the toll of loss and death from fires in the future. But fire is still a deadly threat, so it remains as important as ever to continue the Fire Prevention Week effort today.
This year's theme--"Use Candles With Care!"--focuses on an underappreciated hazard. Candle-related fires have tripled in the past decade. Our personalized posters and banners announce the message, which is addressed in depth by a brand new video and pamphlet directed at adults and a new activity book which presents the message in age-appropriate terms to young children--the most likely victims of candle-related fires. The other items in the series, such as pens, pencils, balloons and stickers, will keep the message top of mind long after the week-long observance ends!
